LaToya Cantrell has made history, becoming the first female mayor in New Orleans. The Democrat will succeed term-limited fellow Democrat Mitch Landrieu as the city celebrates its 300th anniversary next year. Her assistance after Hurricane Katrina landed her a city council member position in 2012. Cantrell faces lingering problems from Landrieu's term, including high crime rates, drinking water systems, and storm drainage.
