The USDA Just Approved CRISPR'd Food

Mar 30, 2018

According to a report by Gizmodo, the US Department of Agriculture has given the green light to a handful of crops genetically engineered using CRISPR. The agency has ruled that as long as the gene-edited plants don’t include any foreign genetic material, crops developed by CRISPR aren’t subject to any special regulation. The USDA argues that genetic alteration through CRISPR is just a faster, more directly way of obtaining the same outcome as classical breeding techniques like crossbreeding.
